Over time, changes in habitats have affected the fauna of Marjan. For example, species that needed large and continuous habitats in the past have now disappeared. However, new habitats such as grasslands or thickets provide conditions suitable for species that would not otherwise survive in the dense forested areas, such as reptiles.
The fauna of Marjan is isolated from other natural areas, which can lead to the accumulation of genetic anomalies, and reduce an animal’s ability to adapt to adverse environmental conditions. Although Marjan is a relatively small biological complex, it has a variety of habitats. For example, numerous invertebrates, especially insects, live on Marjan, while rocky habitats and mosaics of grasslands and shrubs provide suitable habitats for various reptiles. The forested areas support numerous bird species, and various bat species inhabit different habitats from thickets to grasslands. Mammals are represented by a small number of species, predominantly smaller ones. However, the fauna of Marjan requires more detailed studies and identification of species.
